Scotland is of course a delightful destination to holiday with your children, but Oban is somewhere really special. There are plenty of places and attractions which are geared directly towards children, and even if they’re not, your kids will love them anyway. Here’s a guide on five great places to do with children when in Oban.
All kids love playing on the beach – for most, it’s the best part of their holiday – and Ganavan Sands is certainly a great one. Extremely popular with families, this beach offers stretches of white sand, shallow waters for swimming, and rock pools to explore. Facilities include public toilets, a campsite, and a jetty. It’s quite an isolated beach, with no shops or restaurants close by, so it’s a good idea to bring a well-stocked bag with you, including buckets and spades, wellies and nets for rock pooling, and a picnic.
If your brood are the adventurous types, Stramash offer exciting holiday expeditions for children aged 3 to 17. These professionally-led courses are available for a variety of durations, from one to five days, and include a vast array of activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, bush craft, climbing, yacht trips, gorge walking, canyoning, and coasteering. As well as getting to enjoy these fun activities, your children will also get the chance to make new friends and learn new skills.
Kids and adults alike love animals, and it’s especially wonderful to see them in their natural habitat. Sealife Adventures offers whale search and wildlife-watching tours off the coast of Oban. The area is abundant in marine life, including minke whales, dolphins, porpoise, basking sharks, otters, and seals, as well as there being plenty of birds to spot, such as puffins, golden eagles and sea eagles. Both you and your kids will love this chance to get up-close and personal to these magnificent creatures.
Atlantis Sport and Leisure Centre
Perfect if you happen to have a rainy day when on your holiday in Oban. Atlantis Sport and Leisure Centre have a wide variety of indoor activities for your kids to enjoy. They have two indoor pools with slides, including the dolphin slide for the very young ones, and there are even family fun sessions with inflatables and large floats. The indoor sports hall caters for a wide variety of activities, including basketball, table tennis, badminton, football, and short mat bowls. If you visit on a sunny day, you’ll be able to make use of the play park and inflatable outdoor pool.
Inverawe Country House
Set within beautiful scenery, there are many things to enjoy at Inverawe Country House. The smokery has an exhibition which is suitable for all ages, and surrounding the house are many trails and walks which are full of surprises. Kids will love the Tarzan ropes and slides, and they even have the opportunity to walk the plank. In the summer months, they can also try out the Inverawe Maze. A visit to Inverawe is also a good chance to spot roe deer and red squirrels.
