The historic town of Henley-on-Thames is one of our favourite places for a weekend break. It’s great for families, groups or couples, and it’s even better for those who like to indulge in a bit of culture and tradition. Whether you’re visiting for romance, sightseeing or relaxation, you won’t want to miss the amazing afternoon tea here. This is our list of 6 superb spots for afternoon tea in Henley…

1. Chocolate Theatre Cafe

The clue is in the title – these guys know a thing or two about sweet treats. So if you have an incurable sweet tooth, this is the place to come for your next sugar fix. Indulge in a simple slice of cake or be tempted by the ‘Royal Henley Cream Tea’ for £9.50. You can also upgrade your cream tea with a glass of bubbly for £15.00. There’s even a kid’s menu so you can bring your little ones along for the experience.

2. The Red Lion Hotel

Dining at The Red Lion Hotel is truly idyllic, with a stunning view over the River Thames and the stretch of green fields. Afternoon tea is offered seasonally as a special offer and starts from £15.95 for a selection of scones, finger sandwiches, cakes and a glass of bubbly.

3. Hotel Du Vin

For unadulterated luxury, you can’t go wrong with Hotel Du Vin, a well-known luxury boutique hotel chain that specialises in offering the best in food and drink. Seasonal menus are a common theme, so you can expect the finest with their afternoon tea selection. They also boast a global infusions range, with everything from delicate Jasmine to exotic Moroccan Mint.

4. Danesfield House

Located just a short 15 minute drive from Henley centre, this Tudor style mansion set on 65 acres of gardens is the perfect spot for relaxation. Get away from the stresses of the city and enjoy glorious views as you tuck into their quintessentially British treats such as finger sandwiches and scones with clotted cream.

5. Patisserie Valerie

This delightful French-themed bakery is located at Market Place in the town centre. Afternoon tea is £35 for two sharing, and includes some of the most indulgent cakes and pastries. Some of these treats have been Patisserie Valerie classics since it opened in 1926, and of course a serving of tea and scones come as standard too. Available 11am to 5pm from Monday to Friday, 3pm to 5pm every Saturday, and 11am to 4pm every Sunday.

6. Spice Merchant

Are you looking for an afternoon with a twist? If sandwiches simply do not float your boat and you want something with a bit more kick, you have to book a table at Henley’s best Indian restaurant, Spice Merchant. Their afternoon tea menu features a selection of spicy finger foods (such as pulled chicken tikka masala wraps, spiced lamb samosa and Punjabi chicken lollipops) with delectable French macarons, brownies and fruit scones to finish.
